One of Australia's favourite small brewers has become a bit bigger over the weekend.
Black Hops opened its second brewery on Saturday, 2 March, in Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast.
The launch of the new brewery is expected to greatly enhance Black Hops's production capacity, transforming it from a boutique brewer into an emerging major brewer.
Black Hops is now going to start distributing interstate with a launch into Sydney on 22 March. The brewers hope to expand into Victoria and South Australia shortly after.
Not ones to do things on a small scale, the company broke records during their capital raise to help construct brewery number two using crowdfunding platform Birchal.
The team blew expectations out of the water during their crowdfunding campaign which saw them hit the maximum amount possible of $400,000 in just six days.
The boys behind Black Hops, Dan Norris, Eddie Oldfield, and Michael McGovern, are excited to enter this new era for the company on the back of Black Hops II.
"The new brewery is going to be our full-scale production brewery, which will expand our volume from 600,000 litres per year to potentially multiple millions per year," says Norris.
"While we won't hit that target immediately, we wanted to factor in some heavy-duty upscaling opportunities to meet our longer-term goals."
The new facility in Biggera Waters is not just a brewery it has a fully custom-designed 150 sqm taproom, which Oldfield says will delight Northern Gold Coast residents.
"Our original Burleigh brewery and taproom has evolved into a hub for like-minded people to hang out, drink fresh beer and feel connected to their local scene," says Oldfield.
"With Black Hops II we hope to create a similar vibe for Northern Gold Coast residents."
The taproom is a beer lovers paradise, with 14 beers on tap including Black Hops' Pale Ale, Hornet IPA, and Eggnog Stout (Black Hops' original flagship beer).
Thanks so much to everyone who came to the opening of Black Hops II yesterday. It was great to celebrate with Black Hops OGs and also lots of new faces from the north end of the coast. Both the Burleigh and Biggera Waters taprooms will be open today 12-6pm. @notoriouseat will be at BHII. Cheers everyone
Since Black Hops was founded in 2014 the company has gone from strength to strength. In 2016 the team became the first Aussie brewery to launch via crowdfunding and in 2018 the trio of founders won the Manufacturing, Wholesale and Distribution Award at the Gold Coast Young Entrepreneur Awards.
The three are also proud of being named the Champion Small Australian Brewery at the 2018 Australian International Beer Awards.
Business News Australia named McGovern, Oldfield and Norris as the number 55 young entrepreneurs in Australia in 2018.
