Data centre operator NEXTDC (ASX: NXT) has officially opened its first facility in Adelaide, which the company says will play a critical role in supporting South Australia’s government, defence, space, health, mining and resources sectors and a surge in adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).

The data centre, designated as A1 in NEXTDC’s growing portfolio, is located within Adelaide’s CBD city grid with a target capacity of five megawatts across 3,000sqm of IT space.

“The A1 facility is Adelaide’s first Uptime Institute Tier IV-certified data centre which will play a pivotal role in accelerating digital innovation and preparing South Australia to take advantage of the fourth industrial revolution powered by the development and adoption of AI,” says NEXTDC’s CEO Craig Scroggie.

“A1 Adelaide which is located in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD offers high density power, liquid cooling and diverse connectivity, and will provide real-time responsiveness to mission-critical requirements for key South Australian industries such as aerospace, defence and mining.

“Additionally with global tech’ companies expanding their footprint to include a presence in Adelaide, A1 will provide AI certified, trusted critical infrastructure to drive their innovation ambitions as well as make the state attractive for ongoing investment.”

Today's official opening of the Adelaide data centre comes on the heels of NEXTD’s first data centre for Darwin which opened in July.

Adelaide’s A1 is the 17th Australian data centre developed by NEXTDC, which also has six more nationally in the planning stage.

The Brisbane-based company last week posted a 5 per cent lift in underlying EBITDA to $204.3 million as net revenue surged 10 per cent to $307.9 million thanks to solid demand from its traditional enterprise and cloud computing clients, along with a “rapid acceleration of AI applications”.

South Australian Treasurer Stephen Mullighan says the Adelaide data centre delivers key advancements for South Australia’s digital economy, opening up “large-scale investment opportunities for local and global organisations seeking to leverage our state as a platform for economic growth, innovation and development”.

“The South Australian business and government sectors will be able to substantially improve the resilience of their digital products and services offered to citizens, customers and partners, further strengthening our digital strategy to enable every South Australian to live and thrive in the digital world,” he says.

NEXTDC has been working with government arm Invest SA for several years to bring the project to fruition.

“The data centre will underpin South Australia’s critical technologies ecosystem and expand the state’s digital infrastructure, helping us to make our economy more complex while creating important jobs for South Australians,” says Invest SA executive director Chris Wood.

Fibre network provider Vocus has also collaborated with NEXTDC at the A1 Adelaide facility, which will enhance the Vocus fibre network capability from Adelaide to Melbourne, Perth, and Darwin to meet the growing demand for cloud computing and artificial Intelligence technologies.

“Digital infrastructure plays a critical role in the success of every business, and I am delighted to be strengthening our partnership with NEXTDC to advance South Australia’s digital economy,” says Vocus CEO Ellie Sweeney.

“The A1 Adelaide data centre is another pivotal intersection in the Vocus and NEXTDC footprint that is delivering high-capacity fibre networks and high-capacity data centres for communities and industry across South Australia and beyond.”
