Amazon named anchor tenant of Charter Hall's $1.5 billion Collins Street tower

Amazon will be the anchor tenant of Charter Hall's office development at 555 Collins Street.

Charter Hall's $1.5 billion office development on Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD will be Amazon's new Victorian home as the company expands its Australian presence.

More than 1,000 construction jobs will be created as work kicks off on Charter Hall's new office project to be anchored by e-commerce giant Amazon.

The first tower at 555 Collins Street is expected to accommodate 4,500 workers once built.

It comes after Amazon announced last year it would open a second fulfilment centre in Victoria to serve its retail customers and develop new Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure.

The entire project will consist of two towers with 84,000sqm total office space and more than 2,300sqm of retail across two stages, featuring tech-enabled environments as well as health and wellness facilities.

The Collins St development is the result of a collaboration between fund manager Charter Hall as the owner and developer, Cox Architecture, global design practice Gensler and Lendlease Group's (ASX: LLC) Lendlease Constructions.

The build secured planning approval from the Victorian Government under its Building Recovery Taskforce in May 2020, which was established to identify and accelerate shovel-ready priority projects.

"We're excited to be part of the reinvigoration of Melbourne CBD, by strengthening our local presence in the Victorian economy," says Amazon Web Services managing director Australia & New Zealand Adam Beavis.

"Melbourne has a rich community of innovators, and we are looking forward to bringing Amazon's growing local workforce to 555 Collins Street so we can continue to invent and innovate on behalf of customers across our Amazon and AWS businesses in Australia."

Earlier this year Amazon announced it was expanding its presence in Adelaide, with plans for its innovation-focused cloud computing subsidiary to move into the South Australian capital's Lot Fourteen precinct.

The group's new office will include Amazon Web Services and Amazon Sciences, a team carrying out world-leading artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) research.

Amazon intends to create more than 50 jobs in South Australia over the next three years, with AWS teams providing support and cloud enablement to local businesses and government agencies to help with digital transformation.
