Australia’s champion SailGP team has scored a landmark deal with Hollywood A-listers Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, who have become co-owners of the three-time title winners - now rebranded as the BONDS Flying Roos.
Founded in 2019 by Sir Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison, SailGP pits 12 national crews in identical 50-foot foiling catamarans, reaching 100 km/h just metres from shore. Led by Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby, Australia has dominated the leaderboard, claiming three championships in four seasons.
The BONDS multi-year partnership marks the first time the Australian SailGP Team has had a title partner. Melbourne-based apparel brand BONDS, which is known famously for its underwear and socks, are both the official title partner and official underwear partner.
Jackman and Reynolds join SailGP CEO and co-owner Tom Slingsby in leading the team.
"We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure. Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride,” Jackman and Reynolds said in a humorous statement.
“Apologies in advance to Australia. No comment on whether we're writing this in our BONDS. No further questions."
The BONDS Flying Roos SailGP team will make their official debut under their new name and ownership at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix from June 7-8. The Australian crew will be aiming to defend their leading position on the leaderboard.
The 2025 SailGP season kicked off in November 2024 in Dubai and features 14 events across five continents, concluding with the US$2 million grand final back in Abu Dhabi in November.
