Multiplex to build new NEXTDC Sydney data centre

Construction company Multiplex has been appointed by NEXTDC (ASX: NXT) to construct a new data centre in Artarmon on Sydney's lower North Shore.

The facility, dubbed 'S3', will be NEXTDC's third data centre in Sydney and the company's largest, connecting directly to the existing 'S1' and 'S2' buildings in the New South Wales capital.

The appointment of Multiplex follows the construction company's successful delivery of NEXTDC's new generation of high-rise data centres including a 20MW facility in Perth's CBD and S2 in Sydney - a 30MW facility in Macquarie Park.

To be located at 2 Broadcast Way, NEXTDC's new S3 data centre will see a gross floor area of approximately 34,000 square metres over eight storeys and deliver more than 20,000 square metres of IT space. This will comprise of approximately 26,770 square metres of data halls and ancillary infrastructure. 

Designed by architects Greenbox, the project will also include a range of amenities for tenants including comfortable workspaces, collaboration zones, car parking and over 4,000 square metres of critical office space.

Construction has already commenced on the centre and is expected to be completed in 2H FY22.

NEXTDC intends for the building to include a range of environmentally sustainable design features including a reduced energy consumption cooling system. While cooling within the building is vital to its operation, the facility will incorporate 'free cooling' to further reduce power consumption and optimise efficiency levels.

The structure is predominantly a 'hybrid' scheme using a combination of reinforced and post tensioned concrete and structural steel for lateral support due to its higher load capacities in dealing with heavy plant and equipment.
