UTS director of entrepreneurship Murray Hurps on the power of peer learning

For the director of entrepreneurship at UTS, Murray Hurps, his journey into the world of startups began when he was just 16 years old.

At that ripe age he founded ad-blocking startup AdMuncher, which over more than a decade grew to a peak of 100 million users.

Now, he’s best known for his role at UTS, a job that lets him “inspire and support the pursuit of technology-enabled entrepreneurship”, supporting 570 active startups currently - the largest community of student-founded startups in Australia.

The founder, who also created Startup Muster and Westpac’s data-focused accelerator program FUELED, will be the facilitator of the upcoming E2E Summit next week.

There, he’ll be keeping the two days on track and providing some reflections on the presentations of the brilliant speakers Business News Australia has lined up including Advanced Navigation co-founder Xavier Orr, Flora & Fauna founder Julie Mathers, and Go1 co-founder Vu Tran.

A strong advocate for peer learning experiences like E2E, Murray told Business News Australia that he was looking forward to the opportunities the Summit will open up for young business founders.

“Events like E2E are critical, because people need to learn from the people that they want to become, and that they can become, especially in entrepreneurship,” Hurps said.

“These kinds of events give them not just something to watch, but someone to engage with, ask questions and get answers that might not normally be shared in a public forum.

“That’s where really valuable information comes out of people.”

Hurps added that he was excited about the line-up of speakers and the lessons they’re set to impart.

“The people that are there - that combination of people - they’ve done really interesting things,” he said.

“For people that also want to do really interesting things I think it’ll be a great meeting of experience and desire.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from it.”

Hurps will be facilitating the E2E Summit on February 16 and 17 at ivy, Sydney, where speakers such as Mad Paws co-founder Alexis Soulopoulos, TWIYO Capital & Advisory and Flave co-founder Stuart Cook, Equalution and Big Uppetite co-founder Jade Spooner, Ampersand co-founder Alex Bottomley, and VentureCrowd founder Steve Maarbani will be presenting.
