CONNED OUT OF $61,000

A FORMER Brisbane car rental company director has been fined $110,000 for underpaying workers, following a prosecution from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

The Federal Magistrates Court in Brisbane found Nathan Conn, former director of now defunct Enterprise Car Rental Group Pty Ltd, underpaid seven employees by $61,423 between 2006 and 2008.

The employees were underpaid their minimum hourly rate, annual leave entitlements, superannuation, meal break pay, termination pay and penalty rates for weekend and public holiday work.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says the case sends a message to individual directors who blatantly underpay employees.

“We will not hesitate to take court action to protect workers’ rights – successful prosecutions such as this also benefit employers who are complying with workplace laws because it helps them to compete on a level playing field,” he says.

Enterprise Car Rental Group Pty Ltd traded as Abel Car Rental before it went into liquidation.
