Data consultancy firm V2 Digital to double team size with $30m raise

Only a year since launching operations, fast-growing Melbourne-based digital and data consultancy firm V2 Digital has bagged $30 million from Columbia Capital.

Founded by Craig Howe, V2 Digital helps clients with the development of digital customer experience strategies, understanding user experience (UX) needs, the research and analysis of users, software product development, API integration and more.

Howe previously founded cloud transformation company Nebulr, which was acquired by London-based Contino in 2018 for an undisclosed sum.

Following the acquisition, Howe became managing director of APAC for Nebulr, leading a team of 65 staff that formed part of a global team of 200-plus employees across the US, Europe and APAC. He departed from his role in April 2022 to found V2.

The funding round will help more than double V2 Digital’s headcount from 40 to 90-plus staff.

“This investment will enable V2 to further bolster our strong market position by strengthening our offerings, attracting top talent to grow our consulting team to 90-plus by the end of the year, and broadening our geographical reach beyond our existing footprint in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane,” Howe said.

“We have a deep appreciation and understanding of the challenges leaders face today, with many in our ranks having been key decision-makers on the customer side, contributed to growing tech organisations, built market-leading consultancies, and held senior positions inside all three hyperscalers - Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and Microsoft.”

The existing team has collectively delivered more than 150-plus large-scale transformations and is currently working across key industries such as retail, energy, healthcare, media, and construction.

The news comes six months after V2 Digital announced the appointment of Matt Farmer, co-founder and executive chair of data and AI professional service company Mesh-AI, as a board member and investor.

It also follows senior leadership appointments at V2 of ex-Microsoft chief architect Shane Baldacchino to the position of Director of Cloud, ex-Servian director Steve Tzortzidi to the position of Director of Data & AI and former Microsoft CTO and AWS Head of Technology, Australia and New Zealand Dr Pete Stanski to chief technology officer.

Based in the US, Columbia Capital was founded in 1989 and exclusively focuses on the communications and technology space, having backed Mesh-AI, connectivity management platform Neuron, cloud-based software BillingPlatform, and many more. The firm has raised more than USD$5 billion in fund commitments to date, and is investing out of its seventh fund – a USD$600 million vehicle.

“With an exceptional leadership team, spearheaded by Craig, along with an experienced team of talented data specialists, software and cloud engineers and designers, we saw the potential of V2’s service offerings and believe the business is on track to cement its position as a go-to brand for complex and transformative solutions,” Columbia Capital partner Jason Booma said.
