QUEENSLAND Trade Minister Stephen Robertson went to Seoul last month to pitch for joint partnerships with business leaders in LNG and clean coal technology, as part of the Korean Government’s $1.1 billion sustainable energy fund.
Robertson’s meetings included Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the largest energy provider in Korea, sourcing 34 per cent of its coal use from Australia.
“KEPCO understands global concerns relating to climate change and is currently advancing into renewable energy. There is strong potential for joint projects in Queensland in this area,” says Robertson.
Korea is the state’s third largest export market, trading in industries including clean technology, education and functional foods.
“Korea is a major trading partner for Queensland, with new provisional export figures showing that Queensland’s merchandise goods exports to Korea were valued at $6.37 billion in 2008-09,” says Robertson.
“This equates to 11.3 per cent of Queensland’s total merchandise goods exports, making Korea Queensland’s third largest export market.”
