MOBILE STORAGE TAKING OFF

MOBILE STORAGE TAKING OFF

FROM transporting a truck full of nappies to moving and storing a vibrant wardrobe of dress-ups for a local exotic dancer, Michael and Cathy Maloney have experienced first-hand the weird and wacky associated with moving residents to and from the Gold Coast over the past three years.

But with a record number of Australians moving each year and the number of people who move on the Gold Coast double the national norm, Supercheap Storage is proving that doing things a little differently really pays off in an emerging market.

What differentiates Supercheap Storage is it is mobile - a storage pod is delivered straight to the client's door, packed, and then stored in secure facilities until such time it is required again.

Nationally, Supercheap Storage has grown from ten pods to turnover almost $3 million a year and boasts ten sites.

As the head of the Gold Coast franchise, Michael says it was a bit of a risk starting the first mobile storage company on the Gold Coast but he could see demand and predicted the growth of the industry and his business.

"We have had about ten per cent growth since we started," says Michael.

"Most of the storage places on the Gold Coast are full but the beauty of ours is we can keep buying more and more modules and stack them on top of each other, whereas with storage sheds, once you fill them up, they are full."

Based in Ashmore, the business currently has 450 pods stacked with an aim to getting to 700, before opening up another shop in Currumbin.

Supercheap Storage recently opened a base in China with plans to be in New Zealand and Europe in the next two years.
