SHAND COPS 15 MONTHS JAIL

BRISBANE businessman Harold Shand has been sentenced to 15 months jail for corrupt payments to disgraced politician Gordon Nuttall who is also serving time in jail.

Shand’s sentence will be suspended after four months as he was convicted of poor judgment, rather than greed.

Shand pleaded not guilty in Brisbane District Court to providing a secret commission to Nuttall after a jury found he had arranged a corrupt payment to him on April 12, 2002.

The 60-year-old is a former executive of a mining company, which ran central Queensland’s Jellinbah mine and its supply company.

He was found to have had no legitimate reason to pay $60,000 into Nuttall’s account.

The payment was made by bank cheque after Nuttall approached Shand’s boss, Jim Gorman, a major player in Jellinbah, for money.
