CREATING outdoor living spaces that transform private residences into luxurious resorts is what David Berryman does best. So when contracted for a swimming pool job on ‘Waterfall Drive’ –the result was always going to be stunning.
The Sunset Construction Group director says the little details of ‘resort-style’ designs may have changed but the principles behind outdoor living have not.
He describes the project at Wongawallan that won Sunset this year’s Master Builders Trade Contractor ‒ Swimming Pools Award as ‘simplistic’, but this doesn’t mean the result isn’t opulent.
“The whole area really flows together in a way that’s truly luxurious but extremely usable,” says Berryman.
“The home is set on a two-acre retirement property and the owners wanted to utilise the Gold Coast outdoor lifestyle to a larger degree. They are planning on renovating their home but firstly wanted an amazing outdoor area for entertaining and relaxing.”
The work feature heavy use of imported travertine tiles, glass and marble mosaic tiles along the waterline and marana glass. The wet edge of the main pool overlooks the property’s paddock while the reflection pool features steppings with elegant lion statues edging the water.
The large Balinese pavilion includes fridges and a barbeque to round out the extraordinary entertaining area.
“It took us around 12 weeks to complete this job, which is not a bad result given the amount of rain we experienced. There was also a lot of expansive clay that was up to three metres deep and we had to dig down to blue stone in most areas,” says Berryman.
“It was a real step-by-step process to make sure everything was completed to a fastidious standard; the client is an ex-engineer who had his protractor out checking the angles were exactly 31 degrees.
“The finished product is something you would expect to see at any top-line hotel or resort. The way the design incorporates the use of natural light is particularly exceptional.
“In the daylight it’s a bright, sunny area that represents the best aspects of the Gold Coast, while it lights up equally well in the twilight with a beautiful outlook over the property.”
Sunset Construction Group specialises in swimming pools and outdoor living areas. Berryman says the niche market has remained relatively strong as people seek the best use of their spaces.
“There has always been a strong demand for architecturally landscaped outdoor living on the Gold Coast. People in this region like to bring the outdoors in and the indoors out,” he says.
“This project highlights how often the best designs and quite simple, with high specs and top quality finishes to exemplify the environment.”
