JOHN Gaskin, founder of Brisbane-based Gaskin Construction Services, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
As general manager and later managing director of Multiplex Constructions, Gaskin helped redevelop the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (pictured), Suncorp Stadium, the Cairns Central Shopping Centre, and the Prince Charles Hospital.
He also chaired the Mackay Flood Recovery Task Force, the South East Queensland Storm Recovery Task Force at The Gap, and the Central Queensland Flood Recovery Task Force from Roma to Chinchilla.
He says he was "absolutely dumbfounded" after being nominated for the award.
"I got such a shock when I initially saw it," he says.
"It was something I'd never considered.
"I just go about my daily business and daily responsibilities without giving it any consideration."
After founding Gaskin Construction Services (GCS) in 2005, Gaskin joined Brookfield Multiplex as a regional director in 2010.
He has been involved with Queensland Master Builders, the Queensland chapter of the Australian Institute of Building, and the Queensland Building Services Authority.
Like many recipients, Gaskin says he'll use the honour "on appropriate occasions."
"At times you can get leverage from it for the benefit of others," he says.
"It clearly assists you in doing the things you enjoy doing, and the benefits you can bring.
"I've always encouraged in our business, be it the GCS business or Brookfield Multiplex, that we look at the community and provide whatever we can in relation to supporting the community."
