Defending habitat

ENVIRONMENTAL management company Habitat is in talks with the Australian Defence Force to protect and manage its vast land reserves.

Habitat managing director Matt Keys says the company has diversified from its staple property development work to incorporate large scale public sector projects.

“Defence has huge parcels of pristine bushland that requires ongoing management and also weed eradication. The challenges that the private sector face are being replicated elsewhere,” he says.
Habitat contracts to developers such as Sunland, Mirvac and Stockland on a range of national and local projects. Keys says that while there had been a softening in the market, demand for services had been buoyed by a ‘green revolution’.

“We are in a remarkable phase of human evolution and we are very fortunate that our work is purpose, not just a career,” he says.

“We achieve something every day and it gives us great satisfaction to see forests and fauna that we have been successful in protecting without stifling progress. If you manage the environmental molehills, the mountains will usually look after themselves.”
