GLEESON CONFIDENT OF TURNING BULLY AROUND

INCOMING Gold Coast Bulletin editor Peter Gleeson (pictured) is confident he can resurrect the paper to its once regional dominance in the News Ltd group.

“I’m looking forward to the new role back at the Gold Coast Bulletin. The city has an incredible future and I’m keen to be a part of that,” he says.

Gleeson is the editor at the Townville Bulletin, where he has successfully helmed the masthead for the past three years.

On his watch, Gleeson led the news breaking investigations into Storm Financial, campaigned against changes to the region’s water pricing policy and led his team’s coverage of Cyclone Yasi.

He also drove the Townsville Bulletin’s successful re-launch earlier this year and in 2009, collected the News Award’s Regional Newspaper of the Year prize on behalf of his team.

Gleeson knows the Coast well. He worked 17 years at the Bulletin in roles as chief of staff and chief reporter before his 2008 appointment to Townsville.

On October 5, Gleeson will replace Dean Gould who resigned to take up a public relations and communications role at Griffith University.

News Limited chairman and CEO John Hartigan says Gleeson’s leadership helped reshape the role and relevance of regional newspapers in Australia.

“(Peter) has an exceptional news sense and a strong sense of social justice; he is dynamic, engaging and not afraid to stand up for the interests of his readers and the issues that matter,” says Hartigan.
