KOALA KARMA NAMED AWARD FINALIST

KOALA KARMA NAMED AWARD FINALIST

GOLD Coast success story Koala Karma has been named as a finalist in the 2014 Food Magazine Awards.

The anti-energy drink was among almost 200 products nominated across 14 categories, up against five other companies in beverages.

Jaime Turner developed the drink with Morlife co-owner Cheryl Stewart (pictured left and right), using natural ingredients with calming properties to improve mental clarity.

Turner says they are hoping for a win, after being nominated for the second year running.

“We feel as though there is a real need for our product in the market place, with society getting busier and busier – the need to relax and de-stress is important for people.

“Most people don’t need more energy, they just need to harness existing energy into clarity and focus without the stress,” she says.

Turner says the team likes to joke that the “arch enemy of energy drinks has arrived and that’s no bull.”

The carbonated drink combines passionflower, chamomile, valerian powder and hops extract with tryptophan, an essential amino acid known for relaxation.

Turner says a number of distributors have come on board to expand the product’s reach, following increased interest from the Asian market.

“Our dream is to create an Australian drink that sits aside energy drinks, as well known as Red Bull but the complete opposite in drink type – it’s a tough ask but anything is possible.

“We are working on a sugar-free version and have an idea for a second type of drink, which is still under wraps.”

Koala Karma faces Cellar d’or, Coopers Brewery, N&C Beverages, Rebello and Teza in the beverage category.

Morlife was named as a finalist in three categories, including confectionary, ready-made meals and health and fitness.

The winners will be announced at an awards night in Sydney on August 8.
