SUNNY QUEEN TO "EGGS-TEND" ITS BUSINESS

QUEENSLAND-BASED egg producer Sunny Queen is launching a new brand that will deliver commercial products to schools, mining companies, airlines, the military, and health care providers.

Sunny Queen Meal Solutions will provide egg products that can be prepared by any commercial kitchen, in what managing director John O'Hara describes as "natural extension" to Sunny Queen's fresh egg base.

The company has poured millions of dollars into the new brand, including the construction of a $23 million factory at Carole Park in Brisbane.

The facility, measuring 4000 square metres and originally slated to cost $13 million, was first proposed in 2013 to consolidate elements from two existing operations and create a unified production hub.

O'Hara says the new products will have an emphasis on safety and quality control.

"We understand the need for commercial outlets to be able to provide nutritious products, such as eggs, but to feel confident that all quality control standards have been met without sacrificing the look and taste of the end result," he says.

"We need to look to the future and there is an increasing need for commercial operations to be able to produce egg dishes in a safe and convenient manner.

"Our meal solutions are meeting that need and we see this as an important growth channel for our company as a whole."

Sunny Queen, which was founded in 1969, runs its primary production sites at the Darling Downs in Queensland and at Strathbogie in Victoria.

The company previously worked with Coles to help the supermarket giant transition from caged to free-range eggs. It reports that the egg industry is worth $1.7 billion to the Australian economy.

O'Hara says developing the new market will be "an exciting time" for Sunny Queen.

"We believe we have developed an innovative solution to a long-standing problem," he says.
