THE Brickworks Centre will officially launch a buzzing new concept to the Gold Coast this weekend as it introduces more than 300,000 flying insects to the city.
The centre is undertaking the city's largest rooftop beehives project, in an attempt to fight the declining bee population while producing a signature Brickworks-flavoured honey.
Jack Stone of Bee One Third, who was responsible for the installation of the hives, says the initiative will deliver significant benefits to the local area.
He adds that the bees are expected to produce close to 500 kilograms of honey each year.
"A healthy bee population is crucial to ensuring the diversity and sustainability of plants and crops, so the delivery of more than 300,000 bees to the Brickworks Centre means gardens around Southport and Surfers Paradise will experience a complete regeneration," he says.
"Each bee pollinates about 50,000 flowers in its lifetime, so that means that over 15 billion flowers will be seeded within a five to seven kilometre radius of these new rooftop hives."
Rooftop beehives are already on trend in major cities across the world, with hives atop landmark buildings including the French National Assembly in Paris and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
The Brickworks Centre will officially unveil its rooftop hives tomorrow at an inaugural lifestyle event EAT PLAY LIVE - which will feature a full day of family activities, including honey tasting with bee keeper Stone.
"The bees were actually installed a couple of months ago now and they have been busy working away, and producing some honey," says Brickworks Centre representative Jessica Terrell.
"On Saturday, at our EAT, PLAY, LIVE event, we will be launching our Brickworks bees and we will have our very first batch from our rooftop hives.
"It is going to be a fantastic day and it has something for everyone. We have kid's activities, free outdoor yoga and Pilates, gourmet food stalls, complimentary food and wine tasting, a live graffiti art installation and lots more."
The day runs from 9am-6pm at the Brickworks Centre, located at 107 Ferry Road.
