WHEELS IN MOTION FOR QUEENSLAND VELODROME

WHEELS IN MOTION FOR QUEENSLAND VELODROME

THE gears are turning for Queensland's first indoor velodrome, with local businesses propelling completion of the track in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Acting Premier Curtis Pitt says the wheels are definitely in motion on the $58 million Queensland State Velodrome after inspecting the site where 90 workers are putting on the final touches.

Pitt is proud of the local jobs the project has already created, and is optimistic about future opportunities the 1165 tonne steel structure will create for local Queensland businesses.

"The Velodrome construction has generated work for businesses from Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast," says Pitt.

"Local firm Beenleigh Steel Fabrications has invested around 30,000 workshop hours delivering all the steel fabrication, including the intricate roof centrepiece, the 'oculus'."

Tourism and Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones says the project has been instrumental in displaying the depth and talent of local businesses and tradespeople.

"The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring that, where possible, Commonwealth Games job and business opportunities benefit Queenslanders," Jones says.

"The velodrome project alone is generating up to 185 full-time equivalent jobs during design and construction."

The Commonwealth Games project is leaving its mark in Queensland history, with the project generating 1000 full-time jobs during design and construction, Pitt says.

"The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will leave a positive legacy for Queensland, and the benefits to our economy are already being realised," Pitt says.

"The Velodrome and other Games related infrastructure projects are directly creating employment and providing opportunities to build the skills of our workers."

The world-class cycling facility will be located alongside the Brisbane Super X BMX Track at Sleeman Sports Complex and will provide great opportunities for cycling excellence in Queensland.
