15-year-old charged with murder of Universal Store co-founder Greg Josephson

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder as a domestic violence offense after the founder and former director of clothing retailer Universal Store (ASX: UNI) was found deceased with a stab wound last night during a house party at a Clayfield property in Brisbane's inner north.

Emergency services were called to an Oriel Road address around 8:15pm following reports of a man sustaining critical injuries. 

Upon arrival, it will be alleged that officers located the 58-year-old Clayfield man deceased at the property, as well as a large group of around 30 teenagers.

"This is a tragic incident that will affect the family the community as a whole, and other young persons who were at the house at the time, who are assisting us with enquiries and were not involved in the in the situation at all," said Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Williams, the Regional Crime Coordinator for the Brisbane region.

"It's distressing for the family, it's distressing for the community and for the people, innocent people, who were at the house who have nothing to do with it, so all possible support is being offered to those people and I would ask anybody who needs support to reach out accordingly."

Officers also located a 15-year-old Clayfield boy nearby and took him into custody. He was refused police bail and was due to appear in Brisbane Children's Court this morning

Police will also allege the pair were known to each other. 

"We wanted to share the sad news that Greg Josephson, who founded our company and played a significant role until 2018, has recently passed away. Our sincere thoughts and condolences are with his family at this very sad time," Universal Store said in a statement.

Josephson founded the business with his brother Michael Josephson in 1999, growing the brand's footprint to 53 stores Australia-wide before Universal Store was sold to a consortium of private equity investors for $100 million in 2018, and listed on the ASX in 2020.
