Gold Coast aged care group Odyssey appoints Aaron Lavell as new CEO

Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities' new CEO Aaron Lavell

Longstanding WMS Tax & Advisory partner Aaron Lavell has been appointed as the new CEO of Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities, replacing Phil Usher who moves into an active founder role.

The executive shake-up follows council approvalfor the fast-growing company's third Gold Coast project in June at Hope Island, which will add to existing communities in Chevron Island and Robina. Last year Odyssey also acquired a site within a proposed $2 billion master-planned project at Burleigh Waters.

Lavell will continue in a part time capacity at WMS Tax & Advisory where he has been a partner since 1994, but will transition into the full-time role as CEO of Odyssey by the end of June in 2026. During this time, Stephen Holmes will step into the role of managing partner at the firm.

Lavell says it has been a privilege to work with Usher and gain a deeper understanding of the aged care landscape from someone who has helped shape it.

"Having been a director of Odyssey since inception, I am committed to ensuring more elderly Australians can access the kind of care, independence and quality of life that sets Odyssey apart," he says.

"I’m excited to step into a more hands-on role and one of the communities closest to my heart is Hope Island as it will be home to my parents, so I understand just how much this next stage of life matters to families.

"I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time with WMS Tax & Advisory and remain a proud supporter of a business that makes a real and lasting impact in the financial lives of its client."

Odyssey founder Phil Usher says after five years at the helm, he will step back and pass the torch to a new leader who will continue to champion a people-first model that leads with the heart.

"Aaron has been part of our journey from the very beginning and now he’ll be leading Odyssey forward as we continue creating a brighter future for Australian seniors," says Usher.

"I will remain active within the community and continue to help shape Odyssey’s vision of raising the standard of ageing well in Australia."

The company says its model is built around a resort-style environment where couples stay together, pets are welcome, grandkids can have sleepovers and most importantly, the dignity, independence and well-being of residents are highly respected.
