SOUTHPORT RANKS AS OUR TOP SPOT FOR GIVING

SOUTHPORT RANKS AS OUR TOP SPOT FOR GIVING

QUEENSLANDERS may not earn big bucks like their big-city counterparts in the south, but they are among the most generous Australians, according to new research.

And the Gold Coast's commercial heart of Southport has proved to be the most giving suburb in the country's most giving state.

Direct marketing group Global Interactive, which has collated data through its own fundraising activities for clients, has found the majority of regular givers either live or work in Southport.

However, while Gold Coasters are more parochial and likely to help local charities, Global Interactive says those that give in major cities are more likely to support international causes and foreign aid charities.

The data shows that people living, working and transiting through the Gold Coast CBD donate $110,160 per year, or an average of $324 per person. The typical donor is 37 years old, and more than half (60 per cent) are women.

Global Interactive CEO Danny Dimas says Australians generally are well known for being generous supporters of worthy causes.

"It's great to see Queenslanders are right up there in helping charities in need and it's heartening to see a result like Southport emerge as a top giving suburb," says Dimas.

"The result is partly driven by the transient crowd that moves through the transport hub every day and the mix of these with the already generous residential community has delivered the suburb high marks for charitable support.

"We are extremely committed to achieving excellent results for our clients across the board but in particular in the non-profit sector, as the work they do is so crucial, we really aim to exceed their expectations."

The Gold Coast-based Global Interactive is a face-to-face direct-selling group that subcontracts direct sales teams in the charity, education, finance and telecoms sectors. Among its clients are RSPCA NSW, RSL Art Union, Mater Prize Homes and Surf Life Saving Australia.

The company has offices in all Australian capitals, as well as regional branches in Newcastle, Wollongong and the Sunshine Coast.
