Provenir has secured a licence from the Victorian Food Safety Authority to operate its mobile abattoir in the state, allowing the company to branch out from New South Wales.
The company, which launched in 2019 after receiving the go-ahead from the NSW Food Authority, will now be able to operate the first and only mobile abattoir in Victoria.
Provenir was established to improve animal welfare and meat quality by deploying an abattoir on wheels, with the facility able to eliminate the stress imposed on animals during live transport prior to processing.
The company says its production solution is the most sustainable on the market, allowing livestock to be processed on the farm where they were raised.
Co-founder Chris Balazs (pictured), a farmer and the company's CEO, says the receipt of the licence in Victoria is a major achievement for the company many years in the making.
"On-farm processing is the holy grail of animal welfare and the production of the highest quality meat," says Balazs.
"For me personally achieving our Victorian abattoir licence is the culmination of seven years hard work, and it would never have been possible without the support, guidance, and sheer tenacity of the Provenir founders.
"I am extremely proud to be the first farmer in Victoria to have my cattle processed on my property SageFarm in Bannockburn, and humbled to work with such an elite team that has changed the red meat industry for the better."
The granting of the Victorian licence was a long time coming for Provenir; the company commenced its journey back in 2014 when the founding team started consulting with industry experts and the Victorian government.
Part of this process involved liaising with all levels of government to change the law to include the word "vehicle" in the definition of abattoir in the Meat Industries Act 1993.
"It has been a long and winding road, along which we changed the lawmet some amazing people who shared our vision for a different way and have been approached by scores of high welfare farmers in Victoria, who couldn't wait for us to start," says Provenir chair and co-founder Merissa Martinez.
"We are thrilled to offer Victorian and NSW beef, the Provenir way."
According to Balazs Provenir's mobile solution is not only good for animal welfare, but it produces higher quality, tastier beef.
"As a farmer myself, I hate loading my livestock into the back of a truck. I work so hard to get them in top condition only to risk losing it all to a bad trip," says Balasz.
"I always knew there had to be a better way. Mobile processing makes so much sense, for farmers, for livestock and for consumers. It's the way of the future for red meat in Australia.

Provenir is now seeking expressions of interest from Victorian grass-fed cattle farmers, particularly those practicing regenerative farming and turning off 100+ head per year, as the company prepares to enter the new market.
