QUEENSLAND AIRPORTS RECORDS BUSIEST OCTOBER IN HISTORY

OCTOBER 2017 proved to be the busiest October in history for the Queensland Airports group, with impressive results recorded at each airport in the state.

Airports on the Gold Coast, in Townsville, Mount Isa and Longreach all recorded an increase in passengers for the month, collectively growing 3.6 per cent to deliver more than 763,000 passengers.

Mount Isa recorded the largest growth, with 12.8 per cent more passengers through the airport in October 2017 compared to October 2016.

While the Gold Coast had the highest number of passengers in October 2017 by far, at 593,808, its growth was the slowest at only 1.9 per cent.

However, Gold Coast Airport did record its busiest October and third busiest month on record only beaten by January 2016 and 2017. These strong results were buoyed by the international market according to Queensland Airports Limited CEO Chris Mills.

"The international market was a standout, with close to 24 per cent growth on last year thanks to an increase in services to Hong Kong," says Mills.

"Domestically we are looking forward to Tigerair commencing up to four weekly return services to Hobart next month. This is a win for the airport and the region, providing a direct connection between the two tourist destinations in time for the peak summer period."

"Gold Coast Airport is currently undersized and while this will inhibit significant passenger growth in the short term, we look forward to delivering our terminal and apron expansion projects to ease congestion and open up new opportunities."

Townsville Airport saw an increase of nearly 10 per cent on October last year, cementing the momentum generated by its busiest ever month in July 2017.

These strong October results cap off a strong year for Queensland Airports, which in April this year recorded its strongest ever April results.
